Breakfast on busy mornings is often a battle at our house, unless there’s a smoothie involved! I can always count on my boys to slurp down a tall glass of this strawberry banana smoothie every time I make it. It has the creamiest texture, fruity flavor, and it’s sweet (but not too sweet!).

We’ve been enjoying some version of this smoothie for over a decade now, and I’m here to share our favorite recipe, and all of my best smoothie tips and variations. All you need is 4 simple ingredients and just a few moments to make it!

4 ingredients for strawberry banana smoothie

Ingredients you’ll need

  • Frozen strawberries
  • Fresh banana
  • Plain greek yogurt or sweetened vanilla yogurt, depending on your desired sweetness.
  • Orange juice or milk, or go half and half. Orange juice will make the smoothie more tart and fresh, while milk makes it more creamy.

Smoothie additions and variations

  • Use other frozen fruits like blueberries, peaches, or mango in place of the frozen strawberries. You can also use a combination.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of protein powder (unsweetened or vanilla flavor) for extra protein.
  • Add 1 tablespoon peanut butter or almond butter, or powdered peanut butter.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of honey for added sweetness.
  • Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for additional flavor.
  • Add a handful of fresh spinach.

These are additions and substitutions we’ve personally tried and loved, but the sky’s the limit when it comes to smoothie variations. Feel free to get creative!

Smoothie tips

  • Invest in a powerful blender. It really does make a difference in the consistency when you are blending frozen fruit, and you’re sure to get a smooth creamy texture. I have this Vitamix blender, but there are more affordable options too.
  • Start on low speed then build your way up to a higher speed to ensure everything is blended smoothly.
  • You don’t need ice! We’re using frozen strawberries, so the smoothie will be plenty thick.
  • Layer ingredients in your blender in the following order: liquids and yogurt, fresh soft fruit, frozen fruit (reverse it for a bullet blender you invert).
  • You control the consistency! To make a smoothie thicker, use frozen bananas more frozen fruit. To make it thinner, add more juice or milk.
  • When freezing fruit for smoothies: freeze in a single layer on a sheet pan lined with parchment or wax paper, then move to a zipped top freezer bag. This way the fruit is frozen individually and won’t be one big frozen chunk.
