Make-ahead storage & reheating tips

  • Make a big batch once and enjoy all week. Whether you make something over the weekend when you have more time, or want to cook once on Monday, make enough to last the rest of the week.
  • Double or even triple recipes to last even longer. If prepping more than you can use in 1 week, store the rest in the freezer.
  • Use the freezer. Cool items completely, then use airtight freezer ziplock bags and freezer trays. Portion items (see next tip) or place parchment paper sheets in between items to prevent them from sticking so you can grab only what you need.
  • Portion before storing. Divide large batches into single servings (in individual containers or wrapped individually in foil or plastic wrap, for example). This makes grabbing breakfast easy and prevents thawing more than you need.
  • Label and date everything. This is especially necessary when freezing! Write directly on ziplock bags or use masking tape. Most breakfast items keep 3–4 days in the fridge and up to 3 months in the freezer.
  • Thaw baked goods overnight. Pull things like muffins and quick breads out of the freezer the night before and let them thaw in their wrappings on the counter.
  • Reheat individual servings in the toaster or microwave. Pancakes and waffles are perfect for reheating in the toaster, either from the fridge or the freezer. Other dishes like eggs and oatmeal should be heated in the microwave in 30-60 second bursts, or as instructed in the recipe.
