This easy homemade marinara sauce is made with simple staple ingredients like canned tomatoes, onion, garlic, and herbs. Use it with pasta, casseroles and more!

Ingredients
1tablespoonolive oil
½onion, chopped
3clovesgarlic, minced
28cancrushed tomatoes(use traditional or Italian-style)
1tablespoonfresh herbs such as rosemary, thyme, basil, oregano(or 1 teaspoon dried such as Italian seasoning)
1tablespoonlight or dark brown sugar(optional)
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
Add olive oil to large pot or skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook for a few minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
Add crushed tomatoes, herbs, brown sugar if using, and salt and pepper.
Simmer on medium low heat for at least 10 minutes, or up to 1 hour if you have the time.
Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
This sauce is slightly chunky, if you prefer a smooth sauce blend with an immersion blender or blender.
Use sauce immediately or store in the fridge for up to 1 week or in the freezer for a month or more.
