This classic but elegant french toast is rich and flavorful, and anything but boring!

French toast is a breakfast menu item that I typically gloss over in favor of a stack of waffles [1] or biscuits and gravy [2], but when a really good plate of french toast crosses my path— wow! And I wonder why I don’t have it more often.

For me, the best french toast must be thick and fluffy, have great flavor, and be piled high with lots of great toppings. This upgraded classic fits the bill and then some, so be sure to keep reading for my tips for making your next batch of french toast the best ever. I highly recommend serving it with whipped cream, fresh berries, and maple syrup. Everyone will love it!

How to make the best French Toast

Everyone knows how to make basic french toast: all you need is bread, milk, eggs and sugar. But with these simple, yet significant changes you can take ordinary french toast to the next level!

  • Start with really good bread— Thick-sliced, rich breads will boost flavor and hold up well during cooking. Bread that tastes great all on its own, will taste even better as french toast. My favorites are challah, brioche, or an artisan white loaf.
  • Use whole milk— Anything thinner doesn’t have the same richness of flavor.
  • Add a few flavorings— Don’t stop at vanilla extract. Add orange or lemon zest, ground cinnamon, and even a liqueur like Cointreau or Irish cream.
  • Have fun with your toppings— You can stay traditional with butter and maple syrup, or get more creative with toppings like sweetened whipped cream, fresh berries, chocolate sauce, powdered sugar, etc.

And, enjoy!
