A fruity smoothie filled with some of my favorite fruits— strawberries, watermelon, pineapple and mango.

I am admittedly close-minded / boring / so out of touch when it comes to smoothies. I only ever use fruit, and certainly never have added anything green. I know I’m probably missing out on lots of great smoothie combinations, but my opinion has always been why mess with a good thing?

So when my friend Deborah Harroun of the blog Taste and Tell sent me her new book Best 100 Smoothies for Kids, I was excited to finally break out of my rut. I was going to try something new and different! Only, I didn’t get very far and once I saw this tutti-frutti smoothie recipe that’s all I wanted to try.

I guess you can’t teach this old-ish dog new tricks.

I really do want to try more of Deb’s smoothies, because there are so many that sound perfect for summer refreshing, and I will, just as soon as my love for this one wanes. I love this particular combination of fruit— why don’t I put watermelon in smoothies more often? And I loved the subtle additional flavor from the coconut water, another genius move by Deb.

My toddler and I have been enjoying these tutti-frutti smoothies all week for breakfast, with lunch or as an afternoon snack. I’ve even made them into smoothie popsicles with the help of a simple popsicle mold and my freezer— so refreshing on a hot day!

baking tip:How to freeze fresh fruit

Place washed and sliced fruit and berries in a single layer on a sheet pan lined with parchment or wax paper. Place flat in the freezer for about 15-20 minutes. Transfer fruit from the sheet pan to a ziptop bag and return to the freezer. I like to use my frozen fruit within 1 month.
