I know what you’re thinking. Rice Krispie Treats? But these little gems combine two fantastic things— brown butter and a fool-proof quick and easy recipe. And an easy recipe is exactly what the doctor’s ordered these days. For my first sweet venture in the kitchen post-baby I wanted to keep things uncomplicated, and itt sure doesn’t get much less complicated than rice krispie treats.

It had been years since I made these, and I think I’d written them off as not being worth my time. But when I saw a variation with brown butter making the rounds on the internet, I figured now was the perfect time to finally try it for myself.

Motherhood is hard, as it turns out. I know what you’re thinking— duh!

Well, baby and I are adjusting to our new life at home together and I have yet to master the art of baking one-handed or during nap time, let alone had five extra minutes to even think about what I’d bake. I apologize for not having a new recipe to share with you, but here are a few recipes from my archives that I think you may like.

Have you seen my tutorial on how to build a layer cake? I’ve tried to take the mystery out of layer cakes and show you how fun and easy it is to bake one like a pro.

Speaking of cake, check out this Southern Coconut Cake. It’s one of my favorites.

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for summer and craving more Peach Sangria Sorbet.

One of the first things I think I’ll bake when I’m ready to get back in the kitchen are these super easy Flourless Peanut Butter Cookies, which require only four ingredients!

Check out these Almond Joy Tarts. It’s all the flavor of an almond joy candy bar in a mini tart, need I say more?

On Thursday morning my husband and I welcomed a new member to our family. Baby John was born at 4:41am, weighing 8 pounds 9 ounces, and measuring 20 1/2 inches long. He’s got a full head of dark hair and is as cute as can be. We are overjoyed, proud, and as expected, sleep deprived.

Posting will hopefully resume before too long, but for now, I have an adorable little boy to snuggle with.

Rhubarb Ricotta Crisp

Right now I’m lying on the couch, in between naps, willing our little boy to make his grand entrance. I’m not sure it’s working.

While yesterday was productive, filled with grocery shopping and cleaning and organizing, it’s all I can do to just stay awake today. Thankfully I have one of the easiest recipes to share with you. One thing I will say about pregnancy is that it has inspired some amazing desserts, and this is one of them, a simple rhubarb crisp with sweetened ricotta baked right in.

Chocolate Bourbon-Spiked Banana Bread

In addition to all the other wonderful (and more motherly) things I’m looking forward to when our little one arrives— like that freshly bathed baby smell, the adorable coos and sighs, and the eventual chunky baby thighs— I am looking forward to getting my drink on again.

It’s a little sad how much I’ve missed alcohol these past 9 months. And when I saw a banana bread recipe that included not only chocolate and walnuts, but a healthy dose of bourbon as well, I was immediately on board.

Easy Cheese Danishes

There are things in life you assume you can never do. Maybe you tried once and failed, or maybe it’s something that’s always seemed out of reach so you’ve never even attempted.

For example, I can’t do a cartwheel. Never have been able to. I tried as a kid, but ended up on my back in the grass while my much more nimble friends’ legs gracefully arched over their bodies and landed firmly on the ground.

I didn’t exactly think I couldn’t make a cheese danish, but the thought didn’t occur to me that I could even try until recently. Who actually makes a danish? A danish is something you enjoy at a bakery, it’s not something you make in your own kitchen.

Nutella Brownies with Hazelnuts

I remember the first time I tried Nutella. I was in college, and spending the summer in London on a study abroad. In addition to all sorts of delicious treats I enjoyed that summer like Hob Nobs and Aero bars, I fell in love with toast and Nutella. Not that I couldn’t have gotten nutella back at home if I wanted to, I was just oblivious to it before.

Well, I’m exactly the opposite of oblivious now. I always have a jar on hand. Still, I’d never tried baking with Nutella until now, and once again, I’m wondering what took me so long.

Easter Recipe Inspiration

Can you believe that Easter Sunday is only a few days away? It really crept up on me this year and I am completely unprepared. I have no idea what I’ll be baking or serving, and as someone who believes holidays only exist for the food (I’m only sort of kidding), this is bad news. Thankfully, I have help.

Cornmeal Lime Cookies

After a disastrous and disappointing baking fail over the weekend I was looking for a little pick-me-up, something to get me back in the game. Cookies seemed like the logical choice. They’re hard to mess up, don’t take a lot of time, and everyone loves a tasty cookie.

I decided to leave my stand mixer where it sat and use a bowl and wooden spoon instead. I needed to get back to the basics and find my baking mojo again.

Strawberry Rhubarb Coffee Cake

Every spring I eagerly await the return of my garden from its wintry sleep. I don’t have a lot of perennial plants, but I love my daffodils, peonies, and irises, and I wish their blooms would last till fall. I also have several hearty herbs that come back every year, a very vivacious raspberry bush, and— perhaps my favorite— three rhubarb plants that take over everything in their path each summer.

I’ve been waiting for my rhubarb, looking for the first of the bright red shoots to uncurl from the ground. Last weekend when I checked their progress I was excited to see that they were well on their way and could not resist the urge to bake.
